Occupations are the daily activities that we all participate in. Occupations are categorised into self-care (i.e.. showering or reading a book), productivity (i.e.. attending school, work, or cleaning the house), and leisure (i.e., playing sport, watching a movie, or eating ice-cream!).
Occupations differ from person to person, and an OT can assist someone to participate in the occupations that they want, need, or have to do, but are having difficulties doing so, due to injury, illness, disease and/or disability.
What is Occupational Therapy (OT)?
The Daily Life approach
Daily Life OT uses a person-centred, and occupation-focused approach to ensure individualised therapy is engaging, meaningful and motivating.
A person-centred approach recognises that the person is the expert on their unique experience. A person-centred approach empowers the individual throughout the entire process to make decisions about the nature and direction of their therapy.
An occupation-focused approach involves engaging the person in an occupation they have identified as important. The occupation, environment, and/or personal factors are adapted as a means of intervention. An occupation-focused approach promotes health, wellbeing, and life satisfaction.
